About a week ago the Ludwiggalerie in Oberhausen did a blogger event on the occasion of their new exhibition Regina Relang: Staging Elegance. Fashion and photojournalism from 1930 to 1980. Unfortunately I couldn’t be there because I didn’t have a dog sitter but the exhibition sounds so great I don’t want to keep it from you. I think it’s worth visiting and I will definitely go there soon. If you like to read more about the blogger event look at the link collection at the end of this article.
The exhibition shows the lifetime work of one of the first female fashion photographers – Regina Relang – including her early tour reports of 1930, fashion photography of the post-war period and the photographs for glossy magazines like the Lady or Vogue. It presents Regina Relang’s achievement and reflects the history of German fashion photography of half a century at the same time.
For the first time ever, a selection from the papers of Regina Relangs from the collection of the Munich City Museum outside the southern area of Germany is to see in this exhibition. If that’s not a reason for fashion lovers to go to Oberhausen, I don’t know what should be one 😉

Regina Relang (1906-1989) began her career in Paris in the 1930ies. She celebrated her first success with reportage shots, made during her travels through southern Europe. In the post-war period Relang became the leading fashion photographer in Germany. Renowned fashion designers such as Christian Dior, Pierre Cardin and Yves Saint Laurent were among her clients and her images were printed in contemporary fashion journals such as Constanze, Madame or film and wife.
With her very own photographic style, Relang overcame the boundaries between fashion and reportage photography. She staged models in the spirit of the glamorous Hollywood movies or embedded the latest fashion collections in an everyday context. In the 1960s she finally changed her style and started working in a studio.
I have to admit I never heard of Regina Relang before and can’t wait to see her works in the exhibition to get the full picture. It’s great to see that there were strong women in the field of fashion photography and it’s very sad that we know so little about them. It’s about time to change that!

Liebe Michelle,

Michelle
