Last week was one of the most exciting in my new job with a publisher. It was book fair time. The week of the book fair in Frankfurt is the most important week of the year for most publishing houses. It’s also a bit like meeting old class mates. Everybody working in the publishing industry was there. It’s the place to be in October for all of us. So you probably can imagine how excited I was. I always dreamed of going to book fair but I never managed before and going for the first time as an exhibitor was even more thrilling. Of course it’s also a reason why I haven’t seen all of it. I spend a lot of time at our booth and not walking around, but I still managed to check out a lot. Way too much to put in a post actually. And as I don’t want to bore you to death, I just show you my personal highlights of last week. The awesome books I discovered will be part of #artbookfriday so I leave them out completely. Life needs some tension anyway, right?!
This was our booth and the place I spend the most time at. I was in charge of the posters and merchandise beforehand, but I think they came out great and we got a lot of positive feedback. If you want to know more about the books we presented check out the Kerber Blog during the next days.
One of my favorite booths was the “Book Cover Clinic” by 75B from the Netherlands. The designers try to bring attention to the importance of cover designs and the people doing that professionally. I totally agree with the message and welcome the idea of more fame to great designers. The world would be a less beautiful place without them. And working for a publisher I just know how important a great cover is for book, it’s the first thing you see and it has to attract you, otherwise you will probably not even look at it for a second time. So during the book fair you could go to the book cover clinic with any book and get a new design for it. I have seen some amazing things happen there. Unfortunately I didn’t have the time to try it out myself.
I saw some amazing booths in Frankfurt and I loved the details you could find at the big publishing houses. These are just two of them but they were my favorites. Honestly how cool is a lamp looking like a book? I will defiantly try to copy the one consisting of a variety of them for my apartment. It will look just awesome in my office and it’s a great use for books which you won’t read a second time. If I ever have the time to build it I will share it on Instagram with you.
This was the coolest book presentation at the whole fair. It’s the “most beautiful book in the world” as the New Yorker put it and I just had to stop there. It’s a magical object and one of those books which show you why a kindle can never outrange a book. Don’t get me wrong I love ebooks because they’re a so handy when you travel and everything but there are books which you need in print because it’s worth it. This is one of them. I ordered it right away and I can’t wait to read it. Hopefully it will arrive soon.
And there was Star Wars. Oh my god you won’t believe how thrilled I was when I saw all those Star Wars articles everywhere. As the new movie will be released in December there are of course a lot of books newly published. I think it’s great and a good way to show young people how a book can give you some extra knowledge like no movie can. I am a big fan and can’t wait to see part VII soon and I am excited I could get one of those green tote bags at the fair.
These were my highlights of book fair last week. I hope you like them 😉 another big highlight was the opening of the William Forsythe exhibition at MMK Frankfurt, but you can read all about that tomorrow.
