The dark side of fashion | Exhibition

Where do our clothes come from? How are they produced? How do people live who work in the fashion industry? Do people, animals and nature have to suffer in the process of fashion? The exhibiton at Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg casts a critical glimpse behind the scenes of glamorous fashion. Shocking, sad, moving! Fashion can have a very dark side…

The exhibition is full with info screens and video material about the conditions in the countries most of our clothes are produced in. It is bounded by the magic triangle of consumerism, economic interests and ecological issues, and throws light on these themes from the following aspects: fashion & victims; poverty & affluence; global & local effects; wages & profits; garments & chemicals; clothes & the ecological backpack; new fibre technologies. How is it possible to get shirts for 5 Euros or less? Well, because people all around the world suffer for cheap and awful clothes. It’s fast fashion!

Films, animations and statistics will rouse you. It’s horrific to see in which way the world changes. Lakes are shrinking because we need to much water for the production of cotton in third world countries.

A lot of films are disclamed “only for adults”. They are showing videos with extremly disgusting violent content. A movie from PETA shows how sheep are abused. Another documentary shows you factories in Bangladesh including the one which broke down.

Is there any alternative? Yes, it’s called slow fashion!

Slow fashion stands for sustainable and conscious fashion. The termn describes a change towards more responsibility and respect  for people and the environment, als well as a different awareness towards products, their origins and our own consuption behaviour.

A small exhibition shows you alternatives. I liked the Upcycling Fashion Roadmap of Berlin. Hope they will expand this project for other cities too!
And we highly recommend that you start to love what you buy! Buy only what feels like you could wear it forever. And pay more than a few Euro/Dollar for your stuff. For more quality and better conditions for the people who made them. Buy less if necessary, but buy the real good stuff!

  1. Reblogged this on kultur und kunst and commented:

Vor ein paar Wochen habe ich die Ausstellung “Fast Fashion” im Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe besucht. Der Besuch war definitiv nachhaltig und ich kann die Ausstellung nur empfehlen. Sie ist noch bis zum 25. Oktober 2015 in Hamburg zu sehen.
